Daily Bread - Day 127

Without faith it is impossible to please God. Without that union to Jesus, which faith maintains, we have no spiritual life in us. It is not the profession of a creed nor of all Catholic truth, nor the maintenance of forms and ceremonies, nor repetition of prayers, but an inward power operative on the whole spirit and life, and bringing the will, affections, aims, and conduct, into obedience to Christ, in which consists the true faith of a Christian. Cherish it, if you have it; seek it at once, if you have it not. Blessed, for ever blessed, be that mother's child, whose faith has made Him the Son of God. The earth may shake, the pillars of the world may tremble, the sun may lose his light, the moon her beauty, the stars their glory, but as .for that man that trusts in God what shall move his heart, alter his affection towards God, or the affection of God to him? No; he can say, I know whom I have believed. I am not ignorant whose precious blood has been shed for me. I have a shepherd, full of kindness, full of care, and full of power. Unto Him I commit myself. The assurance of my hope I will endeavour to keep as a jewel unto the end, and by care and labour, through the gracious mediation of His prayer, "Keep through thine own name, those whom thou hast given me," I shall keep faith, hope, and charity, and be kept.
