Daily Bread - Day 97

The Heavens shew forth the glory of God. But the fullest contemplation of them will convey to our minds a very feeble thought of that glory of God which is to be revealed to, and in those who attain to Heaven. God hath prepared for them that love Him, what Saint Paul calls an eternal weight of glory. God cannot give more than Himself. He is the happiness of the ever blessed Trinity, and in Heaven the redeemed and sanctified will have the possession of this. They will possess God without disturbance, for they cannot lose Him. They will love Him without interruption, for He will till their spirits. They will behold Him without ceasing, for every moment will discover to them in Him fresh matter of joy. Happy is that people whose God is the Lord, and who having Him such now, are careful to retain Him. But let us not forget that to open Heaven to us, cost the life and death of the God Man, our Lord Jesus Christ. He did not think the purchase too dear: but willingly bore the cross, and its shame and torments for us Shall not we then strive alter Heaven, and give diligence to make sure our calling and election? Let the bliss of Heaven be more the object of your thoughts: and say with Saint Augustine, "O Lord, Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts cannot rest till they rest in Thee."
