It is observable that only four female ancestors of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to the flesh, are named in the Gospels. Of these four, three are marked in Holy Scripture, by some great immorality, and three were of Heathen descent, and not of God's Israel. By this fact we may consider our Blessed Lord and Saviour as foreshowing His merciful kindness towards sinners, and that the Gentiles as well as the Jews, should share in the benefit of His incarnation and death, and be enlightened with the light of His Salvation. This blessed truth is indeed patent throughout Holy Scripture. But we learn further that the sins of parents bring no true dishonour on their pious children, and that when any one lives as a Christian should live, we ought not to recall to mind what his parents may have been, except to admire the Grace of God towards and in the son or daughter. Let us also remember that each one will have to give account of himself to God; and that as in the case of these four female ancestors of Christ, so often now, where sin hath abounded, grace doth much more abound.
